1.1 IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) V7.1 Server Components Introduction

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) is an enterprise-wide protection solution designed to protect the organization’s data from hardware failures and other errors by managing backup and archive copies of data. For disaster recover purposes, an additional copy is stored off-site.  Designed for a heterogeneous environment, Tivoli Storage Manager connects over the local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), Internet, and storage area network (SAN). This design provides data move and store techniques, comprehensive policy based automation, and data management.

Optional modules are available for business-critical applications that must run twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. These modules use Tivoli Storage Manager’s centralized data protection with no interruption of service.

Tivoli Storage Manager V7.1 Interfaces

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager V7.1 consists of the following components:

  • TSM Administrative interfaces
  • Tivoli Storage Manager Operations Center
  • Tivoli Storage Manager Server
  • TSM Scheduler Services
  • TSM Backup-archive client
  • Tivoli Storage Manager database
  • Tivoli Storage Manager recovery log
  • Storage pools
  • Policy-based management
  • Media library

 Tivoli Storage Manager Interfaces

You can access TSM Server and TSM client through various interfaces as mentioned below
  • Operations Center accessed through web browser and default secure port 11090
  • Backup-archive client GUI accessed through dsm (Windows) dsmj (UNIX) commands.
  • Web client GUI accessed through web browser and default port 1581
  • Backup-archive command line accessed through command dsmc
  • Tivoli Storage Manager server command line accessed through dsmadmc, Operations Center, and server console.

Tivoli Storage Manager Operations Center

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Operations Center is a new added dashboard-style management interface starting from TSM V6.4 to simplify TSM operations and monitoring. You can use the Operations Center, command-line interfaces, backup-archive graphical user interface (GUI), and a web client interface to manage your Tivoli Storage Manager environment.

Tivoli Storage Manager Server instance

Tivoli Storage Manager server refers to an instance, not a physical system. A single system can run multiple instances of the server. In a typical local area network or LAN configuration, the Tivoli Storage Manager server stores to the storage media the backup or archive data from the backup-archive clients that it supports. The server also has a database to manage data, including policy management objects, users and administrators, and client nodes.

TSM Scheduler Services

Tivoli Storage Manager includes a central scheduling component to automatically process the administrative commands and backup-archive client operations during the specific time period when the schedule is activated. An administrator is responsible to create and maintain the schedules in each policy domain. Tivoli Storage Manager scheduling is split into two categories administrative scheduling and backup-archive client scheduling
  • Administrator-defined schedules allow for the automation of Tivoli Storage Manager server and backup-archive client operations. A comprehensive and integrated set of schedules can provide the basis for efficient data management with little need for intervention during normal operations.
  • Scheduling Tivoli Storage Manager backup-archive client operations consists of schedules on the Tivoli Storage Manager server and a scheduler component that runs on the Tivoli Storage Manager backup-archive client machine.

TSM Backup-archive client

A backup-archive client is usually a server. Application servers and file servers, and also desktop workstations and portable PCs, are backup-archive clients to the Tivoli Storage Manager server. Physical client systems are registered on the server as nodes. File servers, workstations, and database servers that are backed up, are referred to as clients.
  • The Tivoli Storage Manager backup-archive client is a service that sends data to and retrieves data from a Tivoli Storage Manager server. The Tivoli Storage Manager backup-archive client must be installed on every machine that transfers data to server-managed storage called storage pools. This machine might be a workstation, a file, or a database server.
  • The Tivoli Storage Manager server uses a unique node name for identifying each Tivoli Storage Manager backup-archive client instance. The Tivoli Storage Manager backup-archive client supports encryption, and can use a password for authenticating communications between the Tivoli Storage Manager backup-archive client and server.

Tivoli Storage Manager Database

Earlier versions of Tivoli Storage Manager used a proprietary B+-tree database. As of version 6, the Tivoli Storage Manager database is built on DB2. This database is part of Tivoli Storage Manager and you must not manage it as a DB2 database. The information that the database stores includes the file name, file size, management class, copy group, location of the files in Tivoli Storage Manager server storage, and all other information except for the data. Data is stored in a storage pool.
  • When the Tivoli Storage Manager server is installed, a database and recovery logs are created. Tivoli Storage Manager saves information in the Tivoli Storage Manager database about each file, logical volume, or database that it backs up, archives, or migrates.
  • The Tivoli Storage Manager database is the heart of Tivoli Storage Manager. You need take backup of this database in regular intervals in order to restore the database to the current state if any disaster occurs.

Tivoli Storage Manager Recovery log

The server uses the recovery log as a scratch pad for the database, recording information about client and server actions while the actions are performed. Changes to the database are recorded in the recovery log to maintain a consistent database image. The recovery log stores data that is required to back up a restored database to the most recent committed transaction. Starting TSM V6, the Recoverylog consists of Activelog, Archivelog, Active mirror log and Archive failover log.

TSM Storage pools

Storage pools are collections of similar media that provide storage for backed up, archived, and migrated files. These pools can be chained to create a storage hierarchy. You can use any supported sequential media in all copy storage pools. There are 2 important process which moves client backups within the storage hierarchy.

Migration: Data moves from the primary disk pool directly to tape pools.
Copy data: Data moves from the primary disk pool to file pools or disk pools to tape pools

A storage pool volume is the basic unit of storage for the Tivoli Storage Manager storage pools. A volume might be a logical volume, a standard file system file, a tape cartridge, or an optical cartridge. A unique volume identifier identifies each volume.

Tivoli Storage Manager Policies

Backup-archive client data is centrally managed by business policy. The administrator creates policies and stores them in the database on the server. Policies are defined based on the business requirements for data backup and retention. These requirements, sometimes referred to as a storage service level agreement (SLA), identify when to perform backups, how long and how many copies of files to retain, and other requirements that the customer specifies. This feature makes it possible for different departments with different types of data to have their own customized storage management plan.

Tivoli Storage Manager Policy Structure

With policies, you can manage data that is based on business requirements by defining the following information
  • Files that are eligible for backup
  • Files that are eligible for archive
  • Data storage location
  • Length of time for retaining data
  • Number of versions of data to retain

1.2 IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Backup and Archive Functions and Features

Backup and Restore Functions

Tivoli Storage Manager can create backups of both files and raw logical volumes. When backing up files, the Tivoli Storage Manager server database keeps a list of all files and their attributes: time, date, size, access control lists, and extended attributes. It treats raw logical volumes as separate entities, and the management class policy applies to the entire image. No tracking of individual files occurs in an image backup because it is treated as an object.

Backup: Creates a copy of a file to protect against the operational loss or destruction of that file. Customers control backups by defining the backup frequency and number of versions.

Restore: Places backup copies of files into a customer-designated system or workstation after the loss of a file. By default, the backup restores and replaces the most recent version of each active file that is requested.

Four levels of backup are available as follows:
  • Byte level, small amounts of data, for example, on notebook computers.
  • Block level, bigger amounts of data, between 40 KB and 2 MB.
  • File level, normal files
  • Image level, which includes file system and files

Tivoli Storage Manager uses progressive backup methodology, also known as incremental backups by default.

Progressive incremental backup Features:
  • Backup of only new or changed files
  • No redundant or full backups
  • Tracks data at the file level
  • Accurate restore of files to a point-in-time copy
  • Requires less storage space compared to full backup
  • Requires less network bandwidth
  • Uses less time
  • Shorter backup window time frames • Faster restores

Traditional backups of a weekly full backup, plus incremental backups require more time and space than the Tivoli Storage Manager’s incremental forever concept. TSM supports different kinds of backup methods/types such as Full, Incremental, Differential, Progressive Incremental, Adaptive subfile and Image backup etc

TSM Backup Archive Functions

Archive and Retrieve Functions

The Tivoli Storage Manager archive function stores selected files unconditionally on the server, according to the applicable management class limits. Unconditionally means no version limit, and the files are retained for the defined time period regardless of whether they are deleted on the client or not.

Archiving is useful when you want to store data that is infrequently accessed but must remain available. Also, it is common to have a legal requirement to archive business records for extended periods of time. Tivoli Storage Manager has the capability of archiving for 30 years.

Archive: Creates a copy of a file or set of files for vital record retention of data, such as patent information, financial information, or medical records. You control the length of time to keep an archive in storage by defining the retention period. With this feature, customers can keep unlimited archive copies of a file.

Retrieve: Users can copy an archive file from the storage pool to the workstation. The archive copy in the storage pool is unaffected.

Difference between Backup and Archive

  • Backup copies files or directories from a client node to server storage. More than one backup version can exist in server storage, but only one backup version is the active version.
  • Archive copies data or files to other storage media, usually for long-term storage or security. Only one version exists.

Storage media

Tivoli Storage Manager supports a variety of libraries and media type for copy storage pools, including the following types:
  • Tape
  • Disk
  • CD-RW
  • DVD-RAM
  • File
  • Virtual tape library (VTL)

Storage media can be disks and sequential media, such as optical and tape. Storage media is assigned to a storage pool, which is the data area on the Tivoli Storage Manager server that holds client backup-archive data. For sequential access storage, Tivoli Storage Manager supports device and media types.

Storage pools contain backup files, archived files, and space-managed files. These storage pools are chained to create a storage hierarchy. The disk pool is typically first in the chain and generally followed by tape. This is called Storage hierarchy.

Disaster Recovery Manager (DRM)

The Tivoli Storage Manager disaster recover manager (DRM) function offers various options to configure, control, and automatically generate a disaster recovery plan. The plan contains the information, scripts, and procedures to automate restores and help ensure quick recovery of your data after a disaster. It also manages and tracks the media that your data is stored on, whether on-site, in transit, or in a vault. Your data can easily be found if disaster occurs. The scripts can help you document your basic information technology recovery strategy, the steps to rebuild your core systems, and the critical machines that you must recover.

Tivoli Storage Manager disaster recover manager (DRM)

With Disaster Recovery Manager, you can accomplish the following tasks:
  • Prepare a Disaster Recovery Plan.
  • Manage off-site volumes and track media.
  • Manage client data.

2.1 Tivoli Storage Manager Server V7.1 Installation and Configuration steps

You can install Tivoli Storage Manager V7.1 by using the graphical user interface (GUI), the console wizard, or while in silent mode, with or without a response option.  Tivoli Storage Manager’s version of the DB2 database and logs are installed along with the server

You cannot install and run Tivoli Storage Manager 7.1 server on a Windows system that already has DB2 installed on it, whether DB2 is installed by itself or as part of some other application. The Tivoli Storage Manager 7.1 server requires the installation and use of the DB2 version that is packaged with the Tivoli Storage Manager 7.1 server. No other version of DB2 can exist on the system. This is not a limitation with UNIX or Linux.

Installing IBM Tivoli Storage Manager V7.1 is a two step process. In the first step you have to install TSM Server components and in the second step you have to configure the TSM Server instance, Database and recovery log.

TSM V6.X and TSM V7.X installing follows the same procedure except the first step. In TSM V7.X, we have to install TSM V7.1 server components through a new interface called IBM Install Manager. And the second step is common in both the versions as shown in the below video.

Using the Tivoli Storage Manager installation software, you can install the following components:
  • Tivoli Storage Manager Server
  • Tivoli Storage Manager Server Languages
  • Tivoli Storage Manager License
  • Tivoli Storage Manager Devices
  • Tivoli Storage Manager Storage Agent
It is not recommended to install TSM Server and Storage Agent on same machine.

Installing Tivoli Storage Manager Server V7.1

Follow the same steps in Windows & Unix machines to install TSM V7.1 Server

Step 1: Log on as an administrator and go to the directory where TSM Server V7.1 code is located. On AIX, Log in as the root user. If you do not log in as root, certain key Tivoli Storage Manager functions do not work properly.

ON AIX, Change file permissions by entering the following command and then extract the package.

chmod a+x 7.1.0.0-TIV-TSMALL-platform.bin

./7.1.0.0-TIV-TSMALL-platform.bin

Step 2: On Windows, Double click the install package to extract the package. It will take some time for extraction. This will open up the installation manager window as shown in the below screen, you need to select the components which you want to install. You have to use the installation manager interface for any future up-gradation or any new installation.

On AIX, Go to the directory where you have extracted the packages and run the install.bin file. Check the following link for installing TSM server components in AIX in console mode.

TSM V7.1 Installation Manager
Next, select the shared resource location for IBM Installation Manager.

Next, select or choose the default location for TSM components installation.

The default location for Windows is C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM

The default location for UNIX and Linux is /opt/tivoli/tsm/.

Step 3: In the next screens, you need to accept the license agreement, select languages and other options as shown in the video.

If you encounter any problems with the installation, directions refer you to the appropriate log files. The log for a new Windows server installation is the directory that is chosen for installation, look for the files log.txt and logs.zip.  The log for a new AIX server installation is /var/tivoli/tsm.

Step 4: After the successful InstallationIn both Windows & Unix, you should create the Directories and user ID for the server instance, which the Tivoli Storage Manager server instance needs for database and recovery logs. Create the following directories with the instance user id you created for TSM Server instance. It is always recommended to use the tsm server instance user id to start the TSM Service on any platform.
  • The Instance directory contains files for this server instance. The instance directory will include all Tivoli Storage Manager server files, such as the server options file (dsmserv.opt), the device configuration file (devconfig), and volume history file (volhist).
  • Database directories
  • Recovery log directories: Active log, Archive log, Active log mirror (optional), Archive failover log (optional).
  • Also, create the user ID that owns the server instance. You use this user ID when you create the server instance

Step 5: After the successfull installation of TSM V7.1 server components, we have to configure the server instance and database. In the following video I used administrator id for configuration but it is recommended to use userid which you created in the previous step for server instance configuration. This way you can keep TSM server from unauthorised user access.

Now, Start the configuration wizard from the installation directory.

Windows: c:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\server\dsmicfgx.exe

UNIX and Linux: /opt/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/dsmicfgx

or you can open it from the START menu in windows as shown below.

c:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\server\dsmicfgx.exe

On AIX, check the link to know how to configure TSM Server instance and database using dsmicfgx with screenshots.

Now, follow the steps as shown in the below video to configure the TSM V7.1 server instance, database and logs. Same procedure for TSM V6 and TSMV7.

Starting the server instance

To start the server from the command line, use one of the following commands:

  • For Windows: dsmserv –k server_key where server_key specifies the name of the Windows registry key where you retrieve information about the server. The default is Server1.
  • For AIX and Linux: dsmserv –u instance_dir where instance_dir specifies an instance directory to use. This instance directory becomes the current working directory of the server.

If necessary, you can stop the server by issuing the halt command from the Tivoli Storage Manager administrative command line.

Default Installation Locations

For Windows, the default server installation directory is at the following location:
c:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\server.
For AIX and Linux, the default server installation directory is at the following location:
/opt/tivoli/tsm/server/bin or /opt/tivoli/tsm/server/bin64

After you install the Tivoli Storage Manager server and license, go to the Tivoli Storage Manager Administrative command line, start the server, and register the license. You install the license file during the server installation. Register the license on the Tivoli Storage Manager administrative command line, enter the following command to register the Tivoli Storage Manager Extended Edition
  register license file=tsmee.lic

Configuring a new TSM Server Instance

If you install Tivoli Storage Manager Version 7.1.0 and you need to configure and initialize another server instance, use one of the following options:
1) Use the new instance wizard on your local system (dsmicfgx.exe).
2) Manually configure the new instance.

Manually configure the new instance

To manually configure and start the Tivoli Storage Manager server, use the following steps as a guide

  • Create a new server option, Copy the dsmserv.opt.smp sample file in the installation server directory to set up communications between client and server. Rename the copy to dsmserv.opt. Do this before you start the server for the first time.
  • Define database and recovery log, Issue the dsmserv format command to initialize the database and recovery log.
  • Start the server, Issue the dsmserv command.

For example, to install an additional server, set up an instance directory, and issue the DSMSERV FORMAT command with the -k (Windows) or -i (UNIX and Linux) parameter from that directory. That directory becomes the location of the server. The registry tracks the installed servers.
dsmserv -k server2 format dbdir=e:\tsmserv2\db activelogsize=4096activelogdir=f:\tsmserv2\
activelog archlogdir=g:\tsmserv2\archlog archfailoverlogdir=h:\tsmserv2\archfaillog mirrorlogdir=i:\tsmserv2\mirrorlog

If you are not in the instance directory when you start the server, you must specify the directory with the -i or -k

Uninstalling Tivoli Storage Manager using the wizard

  • Start  theInstallation Manager. On Windows, Open the Installation manager from the Start menu.On UNIX, In the directory where the Installation Manager is installed, go to the eclipse subdirectory (for example, /opt/IBM/InstallationManager/eclipse), and issue the ./IBMIM command.
  • Click Uninstall.
  • Select IBM Tivoli Storage Manager server, and click Next.
  • Click Uninstall.
  • Click Finish.
You cannot uninstall only one component of Tivoli Storage Manager. If you uninstall the server, all other components you previously installed are also removed. The uninstaller also cleans up the registry; however, you must clean out the temp directory.

2.3 Installing and Configuring IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Operations Center V7

You can use the IBM Installation Manager to install the Operations Center hub server. The Operations Center uses the hub server as the primary management platform for all the servers it monitors and manages. The Operations Center is only installed and configured on the hub Tivoli Storage Manager server representing the hub. The other servers report their status and monitoring information to the hub server which coordinates with the Operations Center to show this information.  Remember starting from TSM V6.4, there is no TSM Admin Center, it is replaced by TSM Operations Center. You have to use this for future releases.

Tivoli Storage Manager Operations Center V7.1 Installation and configuration

Key functions of the Operations Center include the following

1) Collecting status and monitoring data and lifecycle management of alerts that:
  • Notifies the Operations Center as alerts occur
  • Emails alerts directly to designated administrator, if configures
  • A data collection engine consolidates view of multiple TSM servers
2) Register new clients to Tivoli Storage Manager including selecting a policy and associating to a schedule.

3) Manually start a backup for selected client.

4) Perform server database backup.

5) Cancel specific sessions and processes.

6) Edit properties for clients, servers, and global settings.

7) View details of Tivoli Storage Manager server, including view to sessions and processes.

8) Assign different classes of Tivoli Storage Manager administrators to accomplish various tasks.

Additional Tivoli Storage Manager servers can be monitored through Operation Center’s hub and spoke model. The original Tivoli Storage Manager server you defined to connect with the Operation Center is considered the hub, additional Tivoli Storage Manager servers are considered the spokes. In order to define a spoke server, you must be logged onto the Operations Center as a system administrator that is defined on both the Hub and Spoke server. Each server collects its own data, but the hub server also collects the spoke servers’ data. Depending on if a define sever definition has already been done on the hub server for the spoke servers, you might be prompted for the server password.

Some considerations for installing the hub are as follows
  • The 7.1.0 Operations Center requires the hub to be a 7.1.0 TSM server.
  • Spoke servers can be at version 6.3.4 through version 7.1.
  • A spoke server can not be at a higher version than the hub server.
  • Down level spoke servers are reflected as such in the Operations Center

The default ports are 11080 for http, and 11090 for https.

https://<hostname:secure_port>/oc

2.4 Steps to do after TSM Server V7 installation and configuration

Once you have successfully installed, you should check if installation is successful or not. Then you need to log into TSM server using the admin id created during server instance configuration and then configure the storage-pools, policies and register the nodes. You have to login through the administrative command line.

You can verify installations on Windows systems by viewing the initserv.log file. On AIX systems, examine the contents of the install.trace file in the Tivoli Storage Manager server installation directory.

TSM Administrative command line

1) TSM administrators use the administrative command line to control and monitor the server. Use the console mode from an administrative client to monitor export or import operations or to capture processing messages to an output file.

2) Start the administrative command line at the operating system prompt by using one of the following default paths

Windows: c:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient

AIX 64-bit: /usr/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin64

AIX 32-bit: /usr/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin

Linux and other UNIX 64-bit: /opt/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin64

Linux and other UNIX 32-bit: /opt/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin

3) Starting administrative command line

To start the administrative command line, enter the following command

dsmadmc

From the Operations Center, click the globe icon in the menu bar and select Command Line.

On Windows, open the administrative command line by clicking All Programs > Tivoli Storage Manager > Administrative Command Line.

To start an administrative session in console mode, enter the following command:

dsmadmc -consolemode

Command recall is available for both the administrative client and the backup-archive client so that you can recall and edit previously entered commands.

TSM Administrator authority

You can use Tivoli Storage Manager to register administrators and grant administrators the ability to accomplish specific tasks. After you register administrators, those administrators can make queries and request help from the command line. To perform other server functions, administrators must be granted authority by being assigned one or more administrative privilege classes.

You can register an administrator from the command line by using the following command syntax

REGister Admin userid password Contact=contactinfo

register admin command

TSM Administrator Privileges

1) The privilege class determines the administrative tasks that the administrator can perform. You can assign certain privileges to TSM administrators by using GRANT AUTHORITY command.

grant authority admin1 domains=clientdom

The following are the privileges available to assign to a administrator
  • System privileges - All Tivoli Storage Manager server tasks.
  • Storage privileges - Database, recovery log, and storage pool management.
  • Operator privileges - Commands for server availability, resource usage, and physical media management.
  • Policy privileges -  Policy domain, policy set, management class, copy group, and schedule management.
  • Node privileges - Client actions, product usage, and activity monitoring.

2) An administrator with system privileges can distribute administrative tasks by using the following tasks
  • Registering administrators
  • Granting one or more administrative privilege classes to other administrators
  • Allowing separation of tasks
  • Allowing delegation of authority
  • Varying commands by privilege class

3) You can revoke part of the authority of an administrator with the revoke authority command. For example, rather than revoking all of the privilege classes for administrator, you revoke only the operator authority and the policy authority to policy domain. You enter the following command

revoke authority admin1 classes=operator domains=clientdom

4) To revoke all administrative privilege classes, omit specifying privilege classes, policy domains, or storage pools. For example, to revoke both the storage and operator privilege classes for an administrator, enter the following command

revoke authority admin1

5) You can also remove an administrator who is no longer responsible for Tivoli Storage Manager operations by using the remove admin command.

remove admin admin1

You cannot remove the last administrator with system privilege from the system. You also cannot remove the SERVER_CONSOLE user ID, which has system privilege, from the system.

The QUERY command

The administrator can use the query command to obtain information about Tivoli Storage Manager components and operations. As with all commands, if you do not know the syntax of the command, use help. For example, the help query command provides more details about the query command. Query commands are not case-sensitive. You can use Q as a shortcut for query in commands.

Run the following command to see the TSM Server health status.

Standard and detailed queries Standard query: query database (q db)

Detailed query: query database format=detail (q db f=d)

QUERY SYSTEM command

The query system command is a single command that gathers consolidated information regarding Tivoli Storage Manager configuration and capacity. The query system command combines the query and select commands to list the following types of information
  • Server options and status
  • Processes and sessions
  • DB and log configuration
  • Storage pool configuration
  • Device configuration
  • Policies information
  • Schedules and nodes
Query commands for verifying successful server installation

Verify that the server is successfully installed by issuing sever a query commands from an administrative client or the server console.
  • Query status, which shows if the server is enabled.
  • Query stgpool, which shows that the storagepools setup automatically during the installation.
  • Query db, which shows that the installation setup the default database,TSMDB1.
  • Querylog, which shows the total used and free space fort he log.
  • Query option, which shows that the installation setup options in dsmserv.optfile.

Query activity log

The activity log records all the messages sent to the server console during server operations except for query commands that are issued on the console. Error messages that are sent to the server console are also stored in the activity log.

  • To review messages that are generated on October 24 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., enter the following command:

      query actlog begindate=10/13/2014
       enddate=10/13/2013 begintime=08:00
       endtime=17:00
  • To request information about messages that pertain to the expiration of files from the server storage inventory, enter the following command:

          query actlog msgno=0813

The following types of messages are sent to the activity log:
  • When client sessions start or end
  • When migration starts and ends
  • When backup versions expire
  • What data exports to tape
  • When expiration processing occurs
  • What export or import processing occurs
